Out-Dated?

And now for something completely different. Trawling thru the annals of the UK press I discover that I've missed out on some headline news- Bridget Jones has returned from the bright Hollywood lights to writing her column in the Independent.

I haven't read it, they are CHARGING online readers for the priviledge: but those who have done seem to be mostly underwhelmed, feeling that they have progressed since the mid-nineties while Bridget appears to be stuck in the melee we adored her for. Although she can be seen to have moved on somewhat, as described by Polly Vernon :

Because of some distinctly blurry logic, Bridget - who was 32 when the franchise
began - has aged only three or four years over the course of the past decade.
Accordingly, the central preoccupation of the new column is babies, and Jones's
lack of them. In this, it seems, she regains some credibility. 'Yes, that stuff
is a little closer to the bone,' concedes Alex. 'It's something I'm rather
trying not to think about. I do get really pissed off with this pressure to
congratulate pregnant friends on conceiving. I mean, what have they done?
Something I've done thousands of times, but without adequate contraception. So
being so pleased with yourself for getting knocked up - that's the evolution of
Smug Married to me, and it looks like it is for Bridget too. So that strikes a
chord.'

So Ladies (and any identifying Gentleman)- have we turned on the former voice of our generation? Granted, the last film (I scorn to use the word "adaptation") was an unspeakable abomination, but do any of us still find the book/s funny- or even slightly relevant? Even those of us who have progressed to "Smug" status and have to deal with related dating quandaries?

You tell me...
