Goodnight, Lovely Boy (Don't read this if you've never had a pet)

That was definitely the case with this handsome gentleman to the left who died this morning. Not only that, he was a champion prizewinner, and a prince in his town, where he was adored by all the local lady-dogs and revered by the males. (Except for one particularly evil and very stupid big black Great Dane around the corner.) Taking him for walks through the neighbourhood was a revelation in that regard: there was a true celebrity in the family!
This lovely labrador arrived at a point when my family needed him most, and as such had a special significance for each and every family member, both nuclear and beyond. And so when he took ill suddenly a few weeks ago, it was very hard on us all, especially for those who still lived in the house with him. I felt a bit silly worrying about his health on the one hand, when so many people I know are suffering terribly, and so much crap unfolds daily here and elsewhere, but a sick and sad dog is not an easy image to banish. I suppose that is why I will prefer to remember him as pictured.
RIP Casper- hope that there are just as many adoring ladies in Dog Heaven.

My thoughts are with you (and Casper). Pets hold a very special place in our lives. It's a sort of connection that is hard to explain (especially to non-pet people). They love and adore us unconditionally. They need us and let us feel needed. They sense us, even though we are clueless half the time to what they are barking or meowing about.
I hope Casper is playing with Bear in doggie heaven. Bear, was a yellow lab too. My brother's dog, who just was put down a couple weeks ago. My niece told my mom that my brother (may he rest peacefully) is now caring for Bear in heaven. My niece is 7, even she gets it. If Casper needs a watcher, my brother is the guy for the job :)

Oh - so so sad to read this. Don't feel like you should be ashamed of your grief just because he was not human. It is true that dogs can become parts of the family and your loss is no less significant just because the friendship you shared was non-verbal.
May you be comforted ...
H

Larry and I said our goodbyes to Casper earlier in the week. It was agonizing to see how hard it was for him to move around and how you were all sharing his pain. TG we are able to make choices for animals and they do not have to go on and on, suffering. No doubt you will all have lots of wonderful memories, especially his wiggling bottom and "happy to see you always" face. RIP dear friend.
With heartfelt condlences, Marlyn

I'm so sorry about that. My dog, a dachshund, died a few years ago after long illness. I considered adopting a cat lately, but it's absolutely not the same. There's nothing like a dog.

Commiserations...I know what you're going through and it's tough. OK, they can't speak but the years of companionship they give us is something special.
Let's hope he's chasing cats and rabbits galore in dog heaven, and scoffing freely from off the table...

Marlyn, your memories mean so much to all of us- thanks a lot for commenting.
Amir, glad you understand, and that's a great image to hold onto, Anglosaxy! Thanks.
To everyone who commented earlier- thanks again. This post was a bit out of my blog-character but it has turned out to be very cathartic for us all.
And while I'm at it, hello, entire extended family/friends who now know I keep a blog and are probably wondering why on earth I call myself PurpleParrot :-S

to Judith and PP,
I am so sorry about your loss...some people will say it was just a dog, but I know better - Casper was family. Hopefully he's off romping in dog heaven, where old dogs become puppies again.

I had a lovely Toby, who like your Casper, arrived in my home from the RSPCA and nursed me through a bad patch. He also took ill suddenly and, for me, he was the best Teddy Bear dog I have ever had. It is a beautiful picture you have of Capser and he just looks so calm and loving...and I am sure he broke all the hearts of the ladies! My dogs are my family, they have four legs instead of two. I feel for you, because it's a terrible wrench to lose a pet. Be kind to yourself. Thinking of you. :(
