Slightly Mad

Yeah, I stopped blogging in 2008. Bye now.

Just in time for 25th November...

Sorry, those of you who come here for the amusing ditties about my schizophrenic life in Jerusalem. I'm furious, and this is important.

A study publicised by Amnesty yesterday has revealed that 34% of respondents- male and female- believe that "flirty women" bring rape on themselves. Nice. After years of campaigning and awareness-raising, we're still in the dark ages.

I don't know why I am surprised: I recently discovered that several friends and family members feel the same way. Thankfully some of the responses on the Sky site reassure that not everyone in the UK chooses to subscribe to such offensive and incorrect views. But what about all the people who saw the news item and didn't care? Or who are reading this post right now, thinking "Boring!"?

The fact that this received scant-to-no coverage in the UK media is also testament to how shamefully low this issue is in terms of people's priorities. And if we're going global, it could also go some way to explain why yesterday, when a cross-Israel bike ride- organized by incest survivors especially to raise awareness of the issue of sexual violence- arrived at the Knesset for an ten-minute demonstration marking Nov 25th, not one of the MK's who pay frequent lip service to the issue (and more importantly who promised to show their faces for one lousy photograph opportunity) bothered to show up. I guess Ariel Sharon's inconsiderate dissolution of the government might have skewed their priorities somewhat, but still. When shocking attitudes such as these uncovered by Amnesty are proved to be alive and well and on the rise, and all we have to show for it by way of response are no-show politicians, or family members who tell this blogger that she doesn't know what she's talking about, and that women should cover up more to avoid being attacked, these are worrying times indeed.

I can't actually believe that you have had friends say to your face that they think rape victims were "asking for it".

I despair too, Sane. Apparently there were slightly more men in the sample than women, which actually makes me feel worse.

    Anon- believe it and weep.

That is infuriating! The way a woman dresses is not an open invitation to whomever. Flirty ways does not translate into being "easy". It really is shocking that we have come so far, yet nowhere at all!

    Here Here Parrot!

I could not agree more. I think that you are 100% correct. What can we do other than raise awareness - as you are doing here? Let us all work together to destroy the apparatus in society which allows such thinking to flourish. Let's get rid of all those institutions which encourage the concept of women as sex objects and fertility machines. Let us break down the barriers stopping women being able to protect themselves. And most of all let us destroy the systems of propaganda which are feeding women the self-destroying myth that their sexuality is a guilty temptation which they must keep locked away or the consequences are upon them.

Am I calling for the abolition of Orthodox Judaism - you bet your life I am.

Ooh thanks so much for these comments, very encouraging.

Frumgirl- Infuriating is a word I could use. Among many!

it- Amen, Sister! (Whatever gender you are, you get to be a sister for this comment) Well, Amen to all except the bit about abolishing Orthodox Judaism- that would upset my grandparents.

R.x- I hadn't heard, no: That is vomit-worthy in its disgustingness.

Sigh. Happy International Anti-Violence Against Women Day, People!

Hey, PP, I think I figured it out...

The 1st 2 letters of your name are the same as the 1st two letters of my old name... right?

And, BTW, if you know who I am, how come I don't make the list of blogs of people you know?

Agreed, Mrs. Gilly. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Anon- as I have said before (to you?) it doesn't take a genius...

Thanks everyone again for your comments- it is good to see that people care.
