Clearly not a Green Goddess

As befitting a Parrot, my domicile has turned into a Jungle: Friends have gone on holiday for a month and left nine houseplants in my loving care, because of the exemplary affection I once showered upon their baby African violet when they went away for a long weekend. Said violet has grown quite a bit and has now returned for the duration, alongside eight new "friends". Did I mention there were nine plants altogether? Nine. Some rather large ones too. And I have four of my own. My apartment is a veritable rhapsody in green- you can hardly see the crap for the trees.

Notwithstanding my previous record, I appear to be suffering from Severe Orchid Distress Disorder today: They told me not to put it in direct light, so I didn't, and now all the flowers are falling off. They told me to give it minimal water, and now it looks all miserable. Is it me? Or is it their instructions? They basically told me that they don't know how to look after Orchids either: they've just been lucky so far (ie it hasn't died.) I don't think people should be allowed to own things- and certainly not pass them on for babysitting- unless they know exactly how to use them and take care of them as best possible. Having said that, if that was the case no-one would be allowed to possess a car, a computer- or a child!

Right. So does anyone out there have the first clue about nurture of posh flowers? I can't find any orchids-for-beginners sites to help this sorry little visitor. Any horticultural advice, however patronizing, will be gratefully received. Sooner the better. Cheers.

so i've asked my dad who has a doctorate in agricultural science.

it depends what orchid you have. there are tropical ones and a gizillion others.

you could be killing it because of the heat in your apartment. but if it is a tropical orchid it shouldn't do so bad in the heat.

if it is overheating, it needs more water. but you have to be very careful not to overwater, coz then they rot.

    you're screwed basically.

my dad ended by saying you could probably press a few buttons on the internet to find out all you need to know about orchids.

    my dad is funny.

I really appreciate yours and your Dad's efforts to save my little charge. But as you can see above, it is all over. For me and for any agricultural ambitions I was harbouring.

but- thanks... I'll bear the advice in mind next time I get an Orchid. Which in view of this disaster, will probably be NEVER!

    Parrot!

Orchid bulbs can flower again if they die - soemtimes they are "meant" to die. Don't give up on the little bugger. I would make sure the soil is damp and stick it in a cool dark place for a bit - see what happens to it.

Good luck - should I make a tfilah lcholah at the LLM this shabbat?
