True Colours

And now for something completely different- yet another rant about the anti/disengagement campaigning. I could harp on about the lovely people who spilled oil and nails onto the highways to make their points, but I won't. I could mention how telling it is to see Jerusalem awash with Orange, while Tel Aviv seemed relatively colourless in comparison- and don't even get me started on Haifa. Well, technically, in the part where I was it was very Orange, but for a completely different, far more exhilerating and positive reason... Thank you for coming to entertain us, dear Faithless! Even though (for reasons presumably more connected with Israeli technical "prowess" than your own nonsense) you started 3.5 hours later than billed. On a schoolnight. And I had a 2.5 hour drive home with an 8am meeting to look forward to: Your show was still worth it. It might not have been the glorious Live8, (sniff) but it did hit that spot.

Where was I? Ah yes. So I removed the somewhat short-lived blue and white ribbon from my car this morning. Why? I did this because I no longer want to be marked as "anti-orange"- not because I'm anti-anti-anti-disengagement, but because I feel we are being involuntarily split down the middle by these colourful ribbons which don't even necessarily reflect how we feel. There isn't a designated colour as yet for "I'm hoping for peace and simultaneously hoping that the government know what the hell they are doing". And, last I checked, this is not a football match: this is our future... And further expanding the spectrum from Blue and Orange to entire Rainbows: (no, not that one) read all about just how well Jerusalem "did" Gay Pride! More cheery news to make me feel so pleased and proud to have voluntarily relocated to such a tolerant city, one which is so accomplished at celebrating diversity.

Sorry to always share the bad news. Don't fear for my happiness: these days are thankfully awash with many silver linings, one of which is that the radio people clearly read my last blog entry and duly stopped playing the Crazy Frog! Who knows, maybe peace will come in our days after all...

are u also going to take down your rainbow flag, now that a haredi stabbed someone at the gay parade?

    I don't get it...
we are getting ripped apart, but it can't be helped. there are the forces of good (you) and the extreme of evil (crazy settlers and haredim).

how does ignoring their evil ways help?

Thank you- whoever you are- for calling me a force of good! That's a definite first.

I don't have a rainbow flag, but I would not take it down if I did, no. Also, many of the people with orange ribbons are not "crazy settlers", but by flying the flag as it were they are aligning themselves with them. I don't see how flying a not-orange ribbon is in any way a productive statement beyond "ALL you Orange people are bonkers and I'm NOT one of you." Frankly, that's not true either: we're all Israeli, we're all suffering, and I don't want to further contributed to these divisions.

Flawed logic? Quite possibly. But it makes me feel a little better...

You cut straight to the heart of it every time when you get passionate. I want one of those ribbons because that's exactly how we feel no matter where we live. So what colour?

yes, not all orange ribbon bearers are crazy settlers.
but what i was trying to say was more like "we have to learn to find the middle ground between killing each other and not being able to discuss issues."
i.e. we need to learn to actually communicate
so don't take your flag down, but don't just decide to say nothing because when we do try to talk violence breaks out.
