Slightly Mad

Yeah, I stopped blogging in 2008. Bye now.

The March of Progress?

Emerging from an unexpected dose of heat-stroke and the usual war-stress-related insomnia, last night I caught the final 3 episodes of "Blackadder Goes Forth" in the wee hours on (the all-new bizarrely-logo'ed) BBC Prime.

While there were a few very amusing gaffs which provoked bittersweet chuckles, overall it's messages about the futility of war and the fragility of man made it more difficult viewing than I could previously recall, presumably in view of the current horrendous reality we're living and breathing. And it made me further reflect that this frantic checking of the news and obituaries, this inability to stop staring at images of death and destruction, and above all this continuous and anxious contact with friends and loved ones stationed up north or in Lebanon, all carried out against the backdrop of seemingly peaceful and unperturbed Jerusalem, is enough to render any half-normal person insane enough to stick underpants on their head and pencils up their nostrils.

I'd actually found some non-war related things to blog about, but it seems highly trite to talk about anything else when this is what one opens up the paper and finds:

Witnesses described the barrage of rockets as "enormous" and that it lasted more than fifteen minutes.

An eye witness told Haaretz "I was sitting with my friends in a parking lot and got up to get a cigarette." "I heard a big boom and came back running to see the bodies of my friends," the witness said.

I only hope that I don't have to write many more posts in the sombre tone of this one- because above all, neither the Israelis nor the Lebanese deserve this to be our continuing reality. Although at this rate, there's little to be optimistic about.

I was about to start noting all these things to be optimistic about - like the UN resolution will cause a cease fire and everything will calm down, but then I started to realize how yes, you're right, there is little to be optimistic about, unless you want to be quite mad and just have naive optimism. But, even naive optimism probably wouldn't last that long....

Well I'm getting some small amusement at the thought of you with knickers on your head and pencils up your nose. Thank you.

When a jeep came to get a few members of my yishuv on Shabbat to fight up north I went into anxiety overdrive - my skin started to itch and didn't stop until a few hours later. I now know 25 people fighting up north and it is beginning to get to me. Then again, at least the three weeks are finished and I can listen to some good music. Basically we should tune in when we can take it, and turn off the news when it gets too much. Pencils up my nose doesn't do it for me - although if they smelled like chocolate it might be interesting...

You must be optimistic that the Messiah will save you! And He is coming soon, it is written. Have no fear.

I know what you mean. I also read about the person who went for cigarettes and when he came back his friends were gone....terrible, just terrible.

And I'd also like to blog about some things unrelated to the war, some silly, trivial things, but I'm holding off a bit.

The new BBCPrime logo IS weird, isn't it? And I always thought Mr. Bean looked strangely handsome in Blackadder- that beard does wonders for him!

Daniel- if that is very bad English, then my Spanish is off the scale...

Karma- well, you're an inspiration for optimism and many many other things.

DH- We'll try it tomorrow in real life, see if it works!

WBM- Chocolate flavour pencils! Hmm- there's a reason to live...

Lisoosh- I second your "Eh" - I hope I haven't been infiltrated by missionaries!

RR- Glad you share my thoughts on the BBC logo! I hated Mr. Bean, but he was also quite a bit younger when he was Blackadder. Although have you seen "Johnny English"? He's growing old gracefully!

    PP,

I think you need to sit down and have Baldrick make you a strong cup of coffee, with extra milk and sugar.
