The Sound of Silence
This will be my first -and hopefully my only- posting on the fact that the Israeli President has now been indicted on 4 counts of sexual assault.
While many others are up in arms and making lots of noise, I personally feel that these are very grave charges, and as such, they - and those involved- need to be treated sensitively, as opposed to sensationalised at a rate of decibels. Politicians and fighureheads are decrying him at full volume left right and centre (literally), while he, together with a phlanx of followers traversing the whole country and far beyond, is very loudly protesting his innocence until proven guilty. As is his absolute right. (Although note he will be not be subject to a trial unless he actually resigns, as opposed to taking leave of absence which he is currently doing- something which the law could quite possibly extend indefinitely.)
All I personally have to say on the matter is that these are sad times. But there's nothing new in that statement. However, pertaining to this incredibly complicated and painful development, wherein our no.1 citizen has been indicted on such serious charges, my main concern is this: Whatever the outcome of this media witch-hunt against Katsav, and/or his eventual trial, my most fervent hope remains that the ongoing backlash against those who have lodged charges against our President will not intimidate any abused women, children and men around the world into silence, or somehow convince them that seeking justice against perpetrators of violence against them is fruitless, futile or dangerous. For that is not the case. And we as a society cannot allow that to become the case ever again.
Maybe that's too much to hope for? Well, clearly it was also too much to hope for that the leadership of the State of Israel wouldn't have turned out to be such a chronic disappointment.
PS If this- and the rest of the visible rotting of Israeli society- is getting you down, I highly recommend this article.

What? He won't be tried unless he resigns? Well talk about some reasons not to resign on his part! What kind of logic is this? If you're the President than you have immunity to rape women? Lovely.

see, here's where i hate immunity laws...why is it that dirty old men always seem to get elected to office? you think they have some sort of club? Dirty Icky Chillingly-effective K...i can't think of anything with K, but you can get where i'm going.
btw, i saw old, old, old chocolate santas in the pharmacy today, and the first thing that popped into my mind was when you posted something akin to..."chocolate of the occupation" and i laughed out loud for quite a little while, much to the confusion of my fellow shoppers. so...thanks for the laugh, a month or so later.

You are so right. While the media and pollies are getting their angles and cases, the real people are getting lost in the wash or should I say the spin? You are so right. We have to stick together to give a voice to those who actually need it.

Good post PP. I have no idea whether or not he is guilty of the charges, but I am sickened by the media circus. They have vilified him so much, that when "Alef" is finally revealed, she will be attacked in the papers - just because they are bored. The media will need a new angle, and attacking her will be the only new thing left. I am also very surprised at the numbers of people who follow the media's lead without thinking, and assume that his is guilty. Noone has seen any real proof one way or another. If he is guilty, then throw the book at him. If he is innocent, then throw the book at those who make false accusations. But get to the facts, and not focus on the media spin.

Well, that certainly applies to me, so I read that article- excellent. I'm going to have to read more of his stuff.
And as for Katsav...it's a travesty the way this thing is being played out in the media. If he's guilty, let him be found guilty- but what if he's not? His reputation will never recover from this 3-ring-circus. Will the media be sorry then? Will they apologize? Yeah, right.

Karma- lovely is a word. I can think of some more...
BUTC- Well, delighted to have caused the laughter! Bless you. And as for the "K", probably best to overlook the fact it could stand for Katsav. Klansman? Kook? Karaoke-singer? Help me here! (Where's Yellow Boy when you need him?!)
Beerli- Thank you. And especially in cases like this, when it takes the "real people" so long to come forward, if at all...
Anonymous- aren't you just hysterical.
WBM- Thanks- and as far as I know, "Alef"'s true identity was revealed- her full name and address have apparently been printed in a couple of places. And the compromise of the 3 others' privacy will soon follow, I'm sure. Which is just unacceptable to my mind. They don't hound, or write snarky articles questioning the integrity and sexual history of, people who choose to file any other types of criminal complaint...
RR- Glad you liked: Isn't that article just the best tonic? And you are right- the media (especially the pi-elef dafka Israeli one) never apologises to anyone they destroy, whatever the circumstances... I feel terribly for his wife as well- one can only imagine what she's going through...

Lirun- it truly is. And the Ramon circus is even more shocking, in my opinion, in terms of the faux-debates it has provoked.
Kas- and those are the 4 that have come forward, there are allegedly more. Allegedly.
Jack- isn't he. I might just turn my blog into an RSS of his. (Not that I actually know what that means. And I don't always agree with him on Politics)
Yaakov Kirschen- Welcome to my blog! And yes, disgusting just about sums it up...

Very, very sadly I think that the majority of women who are sexually assaulted, raped or otherwise physically abused ARE too frightened to come forward, in many cases because they feel they will not be believed and so the risk of telling and subsequent recriminations is too great.
Does this type of case have any effect on women's decisions to come forward? Yes, probably in some cases.

Lirun- don't we all...
BOTH- I think I understand...(nicht and voch were the key words) And so look, I posted!
Yaeli- I think without a doubt it does. Fear of what might happen if they "go public" is the main factor in most people's decisions about these issues, from what I have heard.
Anon- and we're not into capital punishment around here...
BUTC- Awww that's sweet. And look, I posted... :)
