Bookends
Praise be! The multi-lingual Mr. Atthebackofthehill has tagged me with a fun Book MEME. Thank you- finally I can legitimately write a post unconnected to war and misery!
1. One book that changed your life?
One?! It would be "The Musicians of Auschwitz" by Fania Fenelon.
(Close runner-up is *title censored* lent to me sometime last year by my friend RF- big shout out to you, and thanks for changing my life.)
2. One book you have read more than once?
Ooh so many. "The Handmaid's Tale", by Margaret Atwood.
3. One book you would want on a desert island?
Can I say "Goodnight Mr. Tom" by Michelle Magorian? I loved that book so much as a child.
Alternatively, I might take the Guinness Book of Hit Singles- then I could amuse myself for years, and sing too.
4. One book that made you laugh?
"Bridget Jones' Diary" by Helen Fielding. And out loud, and often! So sue me.
5. One book that made you cry?
Ah, they all do: But I can specifically remember sniffling at "Brave New World" (A. Huxley), "Great Expectations" (C. Dickens) and, um, "Fever Pitch" (N. Hornby). Yes, I too have noticed that those are all by men: Where's that AA commenter when you need him?!
6. One book you wish had been written?
I think that's a clear toss-up between "Healthy for Life with the Milk Chocolate Diet", "Middle East Peace in Ten Easy Steps" and "My Crazy Rock Star Life- An Autobiography" by Ms. P. Parrot. Guess which one still has an outside chance of being written…
7. One book you wish had never been written?
Well, there's all the racist tripe, and I could also get all pretentious about religious doctrine, or those professional manuals they charge lots for which tell you nothing.
But instead let's plump for anything by John Grisham since "The Runaway Jury"- talk about flogging a dead horse- the poor deceased equine of "against-all-odds plucky-southern-legal-tales" has been flogged, stripped of it's flesh and had a novelty xylophone made out of it's skeleton.
Ooh- also- "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey. Read it, loved it, was SO disappointed when he admitted to embellishing.
8. One book you are currently reading?
"Watching the English" by Kate Fox. (Yes, Yellow Boy, you will get it back one day. And I will pay all fines.)
9. One book you've been meaning to read?
Yeah, right. The top books in my "to read/to finish reading" pile are currently: "This Side of Paradise" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain, "Tuesday's with Morrie" by Mitch Albom, and "From Plato to Nato- Studies in Political Thought" and a whole stack of "Empire", "Q" and "Word" Magazines. Which probably don't count, since this is a Book Meme.
10. Now tag 5 people:
Er, OK.
(DISCLAIMER> I know many people hate MEMEs… So you don't have to do this if you don't want to…and I've also not foisted it upon anyone who has an overtly political/single-issue blog, because you're all busy being political or singly-issued. But if it takes your fancy, absolutely consider yourself tagged!) So now to the "lucky" 5:
Titania, the new local blog on the block
Ushyman
Karma
HolyLand Hipster
MCAryeh
And special bonus tags for:
Graham (who has probably done it before, but I know he likes these things.)

Mitch Albom books aren't bad, easy to read and fast.

Can't believe you are reading the same book as me (by Miss Match!). Remember the book that I recommended you to read? - about your old home town and a familiar bus route (in the days when you patronised public transport). Loving your work! Aunty Anon

Very wittily written. Hope you will write at least one of those wish books...Yay for including Nick Hornsby! Thanks for the tag - I may be one of the few people who actually likes doing these, especially when related to pop culture!

I haven't been tagged since elementary school playground games, this is so exciting! Nick Hornsby is terrific, nice addition! I have to really give this some thought and will post my answers over the weekend! Shabbat Shalom

Jack- good to know- I'll move that one to the top of the pile!
What a coincidence, Aunty Anon! (I too noticed it was by Miss Match :-D and I can't remember the name of the book you told me. Oh well, hopefully in a week or so we can go and buy it together...)
MCA- Thank you! I'm hoping the chocolate one will take off...I have just read your expanded version, and feel frankly under-read ;-)
HLH- Look forward to reading yours. And I thought you might want some tags in this new playground!

"Bridget Jones' Diary" was a hoot! I laughed all the way through.
Have you read the sequel, "The Edge of Reason"? Not quite as good as the first one, but Bridge's interview with Colin Firth is a scream. Too funny.

RR- I really enjoyed the second one too... Shame about the film.
Nush- well you all know my secrets ;-) But there wasn't a category for "Book you stayed up reading all night" and even then all the Harrys' would have to form a line behind the first 20+ years!
Michelle- Indeed. I nod nonchalantly in your direction!
Ush- sorry, let me correct.
Aliza- if you still have the urge to read it before you go, you can borrow my copy.

Bridget Jones is about the only book I've ever put down without finishing. After about 15 pages I just wanted to punch the whining bint in the gob to shut her up. However I was taken to see the film under false pretences and enjoyed immensely, so what to make of that I don’t know.
Yellow Boy (whose wife is dying to read "Watching the English" so as to understand us better)

Healthy for life with the milk chocolate diet.
I can soooo find myself in that! Not that I'm an addict, but if there is chocolate on the premises I will make it disappear.
Used to have a bag of baby milkyways in my desk......
Used to have a bag of baby milkyways several times.
There are five kinds of cocoa powder in my kitchen cabinet.

YB- use the "b" word on this blog again and you'll never see any of your books ever again!!
- only joking. Did you get my email?
ATBOTH- Five kinds?! How??? And from where?

Five kinds...
Two fancy ethnic "save the rain-forest" kinds of cocoa that Savage Kitten bought at Trader Joe's. One of which is Mexican style drinking chocolate, with a little cinnamon mixed in. The other is a deep bitter brew.
Ghirardeli (we live in SF).
Droste (A Dutch product. Great taste, but you need to simmer it for a few minutes - so stay near the stove or the milk will boil over).
Plus Cadbury's. She likes that.
We also have several bars of chocolate for melting into hot cocoa - several different brands.
I used to drink coffee at night. And spend till dawn reading. I have to act responsible nowadays, though, and be fit to work the next day.
Maturity means more chocolate. Who knew?
