Leave it to Lieberman...
Gracious. Was the most controversial member of the current Govt (of whom I am not a fan, in case that wasn't blindingly obvious) perhaps reading my blog last week when I called for strong steps to be taken to remedy the tensions between the Arab and Jewish resident populations of Israel?
Well, if so, he completely misunderstood my general direction. Maybe his English isn't so great- it certainly would appear that way, being as in the exclusive interview he just gave to the Sunday Telegraph, his aides had to re-tread his soundbites, presumably trying to make him sound less of a racist nutjob.
- I personally don't think they were particularly successful in that regard- but hey, who am I to judge?! Please, read for yourselves! And consider how the perusers of that publication across the UK (Morning, Mum. Morning, Dad) might have enjoyed such indigestion-inducing reading with their coffee this morning...
The Haaretz take- fleshed out with responses from opposing MKs, and the usual fiesta in the comments box- is here.
And what with this week being the one post-Rabin Memorial, pre-Gay Pride battles, and, lest we forget, of ongoing Gazan violence- I really should have known that today would not be a good one to attempt to reduce sugar.

As I have mentioned in the post you've read, "racist" is a label that does not stick, but many others do, and I would be happy if at least we could use the relevant ones.
Cheers.

Am I the only one who can't see what the big deal is? Yes Lieberman's policies are abhorrent and it is terrible that he is in a leadership position in Israel today, but:
a) Olmert's bringing him in to the government was dictated solely by internal political considerations- it's not like he or the government has had some sudden ideological conversion such that transfer is on the cards or anything. Actually I think it was an extremely slick move by Olmert- from his point of view- he's strengthened his majority, inflicted massive damage on the Labour party (and put pay to any talk or a merger with Meretz), put Lieberman in a bear hug and defended himself from attacks from the right/Likud. Very slick indeed.
b) Lieberman has not been given any real power, budget or ability to dictate policy- he hasn’t even been given full clearance for intelligence briefings. To be honest I'm not sure what Lieberman really gets out of this. Further disengagements were off the cards anyway, and now by being in the government his ability to make electoral capital out of its' failures in the next election will be compromised. So what was the point for Lieberman? He's effectively been neutralised by being brought into the government! The more I think about it this was a very clever and extremely slick move by Olmert.
Still, he's not fooling anyone with that ridiculous comb-over…

YB - I think it is the embarrasment (sp?) potential.
In a way I am glad that he is shooting off his mouth. I used to be pleased when they banned Kahane, but now think that doing so pushed the Kach movement underground and made them more extreme. Ideas such as his should be out in the open so that they can be effectively debated. Plus, he does represent a section of society, so if he makes us uncomfortable perhaps that society needs some good hard examination.

Snoopy- As I said in the response to your new post- even if he himself isn't by the strictest definition a "racist", what is frightening to me is that he is creating a legitimate platform for all those in our society who might fit that definition more obviously.
btw- are you British?
YB- Yeah, I know, it isn't like we haven't heard any of this before. Lisoosh hits the nail on the head- Maybe it seems worse because there was no Comment Is Free back in the days of Ghandi and Kahane... and they do seem to feast upon our "nationalists" (is that OK, Snoopy?) more greedily than the time that the Hamas leader got his own column in the Guardian.
Lisoosh- Amen as always. It will be interesting (once the embarrassment potential has died down) to see how the people he represents come forward, if they do at all.
- New cow chocolate to tell you about, btw- Milk with Irish Cream filling!

PP- you are seriously good for a girls ego.
Irish Cream you say? Mmmmmm.
Parents coming over next week, asking for Galaxy this time, and some Skips and Quavers. Can you believe they don't have anything Quaver like in the whole USA?

Having Lieberman in our government makes me hang my head in shame. Just accepting him into the coalition, even if he won't have any "real" power, makes a mockery of any peaceful overtures we may try to make, not to mention calls for equality for all Israeli citizens.

At least the Democrats took the house in the States so there is some hope left in the world that things could get better?

Lisoosh- I can well believe it. And those Utz things are repulsive. Enjoy your plunder!
Liza- Mockery is the world. Although who knows, maybe we were fooling ourselves to think otherwise in the first place. (I'm feeling very positive today as you can see!)
Anon- if that is meant kindly, thank you. If not, go away!
Kasamba- hands off!
MCA- Good point- there never seems to be the right moment... And I doubt he'll ever get to my blog, unless he Googles himself in English VERY frequently!
YB- Ha ha. Gotta learn how to put YouTubes on the blog...
Jameel- my Russian is currently limited to ordering various Alcoholic beverages/foods, and swearing. But hey we all have to start somewhere!
Karma- if Jed Bartlet was elected President, then I might start smiling...

It won't let me post a comment on your next post. I just want to say that I'm sorry what happened to you on the bus. I sadly heard a lot of stories about experiences on buses in Israel when I was there last year.
