Ladies First

Bless Google. If it weren't for their amusing reminders, I would have missed Halloween, Easter and shamefully, the Olympics. How much fun to be the person who gets to play with the graphics to mark important occasions. That must be the best job.

So yesterday, as if by magic, the yellow o was briefly converted into a - Not that I needed reminding that it was International Women's Day. For once I remained on the ball! I even managed to surround myself with lots of International Women in order to mark the occasion: I think the highlight was definitely when I went swimming. I unwittingly backstroked into a mini-war which broke out between two of the pool's larger factions: The North African Women's Mafia and the Former Soviet Union far-right-hand-corner gang. These lovely ladies, all well into their Golden Years, congregate at my local pool daily, not to swim so much as to complain about the weather, the price of fish, their children, and admire each other's swimming hats. Anyway, yesterday's impromptu shouting match (consisting largely of curses in Arabic, Russian and Hebrew- how International Women's Day is that?!) was allegedly over a difference in opinion with regards to optimum water temperature. Scary Stuff. Flippers at Dawn.

Anyway, I could go on and on about how every day is an International Women's Day. But I won't. Instead I will remain ever the Predictable Parrot and mention that I am going with some Israeli friends to see this Canadian Film about a Palestinian/Columbian woman. I imagine I will be pretty International Women-d out after that. Among other things.

So for all of you sitting in Samoa, Niue, some parts of Kiribati and Rarotonga: Happy International Women's Day! The rest of you- just be happy.

You will be very shocked, but I actually also went to see Soraida - Woman of Palestine. I'm curious as to what you thought. I found it to be largely uninformed propoganda thinly veiled in a lack of plot story line. In fact, it was one of 2 movies I can think of where I walked out in the middle. But let it not be said that I am one-sided. I did try to see Soraida.

Yes, hope you had a lovely International Woman's Day. Here in Paris there was a big protest under the credo, "Neither Whores nor Submissive!"

It's nice to see that Feminism is alive and kicking in France. One day a year.

Noa, words cannot describe how impressed I am that YOU went to see "Soraida"!

I know one of the women in the film, so that made it more intense viewing. I found it very powerful but also problematic for a few reasons, which we will discuss in person! Nb I also walked out just before the end- but because of a really nauseating migraine which had been coming on all day. In fact, I just about managed not to throw up on Soraida herself, who was waiting by the door to come in for a discussion following the screening...
