Hope, Fear and other animals

I've got another film recommendation for you, this time not involving flying men in red capes: Well, you can't watch Superman every day. (Although I'm sure some people have tried.)

If you want to believe that there one day might be an end to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, go and see "Encounter Point". If you're local, try and catch a screening where some of the individuals involved and featured answer questions afterwards. And feel rightly inspired and hopeful as a result of some of the incredible Palestinian and Israeli figures and organizations the film profiles and follows.

Obviously, if you are one of those souls who would prefer to believe that there is nobody on the "other" side to talk to, and that there never will be, then don't bother.

But in view of the current climate of "aargh" contemplating the imminent possibility of an Iranian nuclear missile attack, I think a film that provides some genuine hope for conflict resolution is great medicine. (Talking of Iran, I only hope they don't nuke Tel Aviv today as has been vaguely threatened, because I'm actually supposed to be there today and beyond not wanting to meet my maker just yet, my flat isn't as tidy as I'd like it to be if my parents have to come over and sort through all my rubbish. Oh well, there's not all that much we can do if President A decides to take a break from blogging and press the button, so there's not much point fretting either, I imagine. But hey, don't miss me too much. Unfortunately I don't even own any valuable items to hereby bequeath to anyone- although Yellow Boy, hey at least you'll get your books back ;-)

Black Humour, eh! How would we get through the day without it?

I think - and hope - that you'll be fine in Tel Aviv today... Prez A is a long way from having both the inclination and the ability to unleash armageddon.

(However, if it turns out that I'm wrong though, and Prez A does launch an attack, I'm going to leave a really nasty comment on his blog)...

echoing the sentiment about EncounterPoint, it was truly inspiring. If only the right kind of people would watch it.

Maybe you'll get lucky and a missile will hit your apt- then you can blame IT for the mess.

Just thinking, I must be a "real" Israeli by now, because only Israelis could make such morbid remarks!

I guess cleaning your apartment before a nuclear attack is like wearing clean underwear before a car accident....I agree with rr, I never thought this way in America, but after being here for 15 years...

In terms of the documentary - I am one of those people who DO believe that there are people on the other side who want peace - but I do not believe that it will happen in the way that many want it to. I think that it will only happen after Israel annexes all of Judea and Samaria, and the IDF is in complete control of the area, so that people who want peace will be safe to express that - not only in a controlled documentary, but in the town square like Natan Sharansky suggests. I think that the Israelis have to be in charge of the curriculum taught in schools - so that violent resistance and martyrdom is not glorified but getting an education and making a better life for your children is considered heroic. The 13 years since the Oslo Accords have proven that this won't happen if we just retreat and let the "Palestinians" run the show by themselves.

    Lisoosh,

Anyone who thinks chocolate last in PP's house longer than it takes her to eat it - doesn't know her very well!

Cheezy- you were, it would seem... Yay! But Kudos on the plan of action.

    Nushy- the post-radiation termites, I guess ;-)

    Titania- Amen- And welcome!

RR- Yes, that thought has often crossed my mind- and yes, I think the ability to churn out overt morbidness is the ultimate acid test!

YB- you might have to pry them from my cold dead hands, but you'll get them back ;-)

WBM- Nice analogy. Although you have to wonder who DOESN'T wear clean underwear... Also, I think you might find the film interesting, especially in view of your second comment, as one of the people it follows is a (male) Palestinian non-violence campaigner.

Lisoosh- If as and when the missile hits there's any to be found, it's all yours, dear!

Nush- :-P. I'll have you know there is some chocolate ice-cream in my freezer which hasn't been touched.

Thanks for the injected humor, though I do hope you will not have to worry about a clean apartment anytime soon. I do believe there are some Palestinians who want peace, and I would see the film because it looks interesting, but my hopes were a bit dashed about its evenhandedness after each and every bio referred to the "Occupied Palestinian Territories." Implies pretty strongly that the only Israelis who want peace are those who agree that the land is occupied....

P.S.New Music Menu Monday is up..

MCA- the filmmakers were challenged on this very point following the screening: They responded that they had made the translations into all 3 languages (Arabic English Hebrew) culturally sensitive to the viewers. There were many discussions about it, but they went with "OPT" and other such phrases in the end for the English, in line with the UN labels of this region to maintain a balance. While the English said OPT, the Hebrew said "Shtachim" (territories- nb NOT "Occupied Territories") or "over the Green Line" while the Arabic used the term "Duffeh" which -to the best of my knowledge- means the "(West) Occupied Territories".

I can vouch for further evenhandedness in as much as the label "IDF" was also used (in English and Hebrew) when describing the Israeli army- and I've personally never seen "OPT" and "IDF" used in the same context.

I know it sounds incongruous but it isn't actually a political film, per se. I think they tried really hard to not put anyone off wanting to see it. So while I understand that you might have reservations, I'd not read too much into the language used.

    - and thanks for the return of MMM!
